ArtbankSA PESP3 Call-to-Artists 2022

Apply to create art for a period of four (4) months under the PESP3 2022/2023 Art Creating Programme consisting of two sub-programmes;

  • Sub-programme 1 – Art Created by Individual Visual Artists
  • Sub-programme 2 – Art Created by Groups of Visual Artists (preferably for outdoor/public art)

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has made Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP3) Funding available to the cultural and creative industry. The aim is to expand the creative industry and contributing to economic recovery and reconstruction. Due to the successful implementation of the first PESP in 2020, the National Museum, with coordination by the Art Bank of South Africa, will again implement the Commissioning Programme in 2022.

 

PROGRAMME CONTENT

Sub-programme 1 – Art created by Individual Artists

This program will employ visual artists to each create art works for the National Museum. Once an artist is selected for the programme, the artwork(s) created will belong to the National Museum after payment of the tranches.

Created works will be submitted to the ArtbankSA Acquisitions Committee to be considered for inclusion in the ArtbankSA Contemporary Visual Art Collection.

Monthly stipend for artists: Various (Depends on Artist Category)

Category A: R5 700 (for a maximum period of four months)

Sub-programme 2 – Art created by Groups of Visual Artists (preferably for outdoor/public art)

This program will employ visual artists to create public art. Artists in this program will work in groups and collaborate on creating one or more large scale artworks that could become local attractions.

Monthly stipend for artists: R5 700 (for a maximum period of four months)

ELIGIBILITY CATORIES FOR SUB-PROGRAMME1

Artists to participate in the programmes will be categorized into three categories:

Category A Qualification guide:

  • Artists who have had less than 2 solo exhibitions at an art gallery/art museum.
  • Artists that have participated in less than 10 group exhibitions at reputable galleries/institution. This includes participating as an art competition finalist.

Category B Qualification guide:

  • Postgraduates’ artists and/ or artists with at least 10 years’ experience as a productive studio artist can enter this category.
  • Artists who have had 2 or more solo exhibitions at an art gallery/art museum involving more than 10 works.
  • Artists that have participated in between 10 and 20 group exhibitions at reputable galleries/institution. This includes participating as an art competition finalist.
  • Having received a significant national or international award will be advantageous to qualify for this category.

Category C Qualification guide:

  • Postgraduate artists and/ or artists with more than 15 years’ experience as a productive studio artist can enter this category.
  • Artists who have had at least 5 or more solo exhibitions at an art gallery/ art museum involving more than 10 works.
  • Artists that have participated in more than 20 group exhibitions, nationally and internationally. This includes participating as an art competition finalist.
  • Having received a significant national or international award will be advantageous to qualify for this category

SUBMISSION CRITERIA

  • A completed application form is required
  • Submit a CV (maximum 2 pages), please indicate which province and district you live and work in.
  • Must include an artist statement and brief profile
  • Certified ID copy
  • Account details confirmed by a stamped bank letter
  • Be willing to enter into a written Agreement.
  • Applicants will be required to register on the Central Supplier Database (CSD) and be SARS tax compliant.

The decision of the Council of the National Museum is final.

Nonadherence to the above criteria will result in the application being disqualified.
