BIOGRAPHY OF ZIYANDA MAJOZI
Ziyanda Majozi is a full-time artist based in Cape Town who works in mosaic art medium, using mostly natural stone. Born in 1985, Ziyanda was raised in the rural Eastern Cape. She has been practising art for the past 10 years while living in Cape Town. Before discovering mosaic as a medium she studied at Spier Arts Academy.
Majozi is currently working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The work she is currently making is different from what she does under normal circumstances. She is discovering new ways and media to incorporate in staying creative. Using found material and mixed media she has found a way to explore portraiture in a different manner. The subject is diverse as it is determined by a feeling of everyday.
Majozi has been part of numerous residencies in South Africa and abroad such as the Thami Mnyele residency in Netherlands, David Koloane mentorship programme at Bag factory artist studios and the Gallery Momo residency in Johannesburg. In the past she has worked and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists doing architectural mosaics around the world. She has also collaborated with Prof. Sir Zanele Muholi who has been her mentor throughout her artistic and visual activism career. Ziyanda has showcased her mosaics and prints at two consecutive FNB Joburg Artfairs in 2013 and 2014.
Majozi is part of the J.P Morgan Abadali artist development programme and art collection at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank. She is currently developing young unskilled artists by doing workshops and community development projects through Greatmore Art Studios and Embawuleni collective.
Majozi is a master in contemporary mosaics. She has been dedicated in working hard to creating an unconventional and unique approach through this medium.
