BIOGRAPHY OF MONDLI MBHELE
Mondli Mbhele (b. 1994) was born in Cato Manor, Mayville Durban. He studied at the BAT Centre, in the one year visual art programme they offer. He also attended the Velobala weekend classes hosted by Durban University of Technology. He is a member of Amasosha Art Movement, which is a collective of young Durban artists that promote hard work and solidarity amongst artist.
His works question the transformation of domestic workers’ lives after 24 years of Freedom. He is interested in the hard conditions that domestic workers face in their work environments, without forgetting the dreams that they have in uplifting their families. He uses collage as a medium of expression. He says newspapers carry the events and stories of people but once people read it, they throw it away. He collects these stories and recycles them into a new form of art that will remain forever and creates a new dialogue that will never be destroyed again.
