BIOGRAPHY OF SPHELPHELO MNGUNI
Sphephelo Mnguni is a young multimedia contemporary artist born and bred in Durban’s Umlazi Township. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology in 2016 and has exhibited his work at a number of galleries in Durban and around the country. Mnguni has a deep-rooted love for his city, and he’s quite involved in the Durban street art scene, having done numerous murals in and around the city. Mnguni enjoys exploring various artistic modes of expression, including sound, film, painting, drawing, digital art, and the aforementioned street-art. But of all these techniques in art, he mainly enjoys collaging, hence having made a monumental collage installation titled Compositionz in 2017, curated by himself and Matthew Ovendale at TheOtherRoom Durban.
He’s just had a collaborative open studio exhibition with fellow artist Wonder Buhle Mbambo, titled Unfinished (2019), which explores conceptual-contemporary-art elements in Durban. And most recently, Mnguni has just completed a three- month Bremer Kunststipendium art residency in Germany, from November of 2019 to February 2020. He’s currently working on a new portfolio of artworks.
