BIOGRAPHY OF TAKALANI LEGEGE

Takalani Ligege, currently lives and works in Thohoyandou Block, specializing in oil on canvas paintings and linocut prints. He also interested in sculptures of various media, especially bronze sculptures.

Ligege is a self-taught artist. He believes that the responsibility of cultural preservation and social identity rest with the artists of that era. For Ligege, it is important that his art reflects his cultural heritage while remaining relevant to his audience.

He is a full time artists and art administrator, who runs a visual art studio platform, Vendart Trading Enterprise (Pty)Ltd, which  aims to connect marginalised or previously disadvantaged artists with galleries and art collectors. One of the highlights of his career was exhibiting at the FNB Art Show, which he says had been an eye opening experience for him.

Through the Artists in Schools program, a Department of Arts and Culture program, he works with other artists to unearth and inspire creative curiosity of learners in selected schools in the Vhembe District. He was able to complement the curriculum of the learners by providing them with practical experience in art.  In collaboration with the University of Venda Art Gallery, he is organizing a series of solo exhibitions by local artists “Revisiting Artists of Vhembe District”.
