BIOGRAPHY OF SIPHO CHARLES GWALA

Sipho Charles Gwala (b.1985) holds a National Diploma from the University of Johannesburg, in Fine Arts as well as a Bachelor of the Arts, Honours Degree, (Digital Arts) and Leadership and Management Advancement (Cathsseta) from University of the Witwatersrand. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions namely, in 2009 Collective Manoeuvres Group Exhibition at Melville Kerk and 80+1 a Journey around the World. In 2010 exhibitions in Dialogue Towers at Arts on Main, My Kasi My History and Sharp Sharp Activities both in Alexandra. In 2010 he had a solo exhibition Black and White at Arts on Main in Johannesburg. He has also collaborated with Kevin Clancy, United States on the exhibition Portableutopia, collaborated with artists from Alexandra, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and participated in the exhibition The Power of AND in Johannesburg in 2011.

Gwala was the winner of City of Joburg Design Competition for a totem and got a photographic commission from Johannesburg Development Agency for the Alexandra Heritage Museum in 2016. In 2015 he participated in Alexandra mosaic project, the decoration of the street furniture. In 2014 he was commissioned by SA Post Office to design a stamp and stamp sheet to commemorate Alexandra’s 100-year Anniversary. In collaboration with the Trinity Session and Borderless, he created the Temporary Museum on the banks of Jukskei River in Alexandra Township. He founded Gomorallective, a collective of artists working together in Alexandra which aims to have a centre in the township, a space where artists can express themselves.
