CLOSED: Invitation for Professionals of the South African Visual Arts Sector to Serve as Members of the Art Bank of South Africa Acquisition Committee
The Art Bank of South Africa (ArtbankSA) is a national programme of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and is hosted by the National Museum Bloemfontein, an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. The ArtbankSA is tasked with purchasing artworks from South African artists, particularly that of emerging artists to lease and sell the artworks to South African government departments, private companies, and private individuals.
The National Museum is seeking to appoint five (5) new members with visual arts sector experience. The new appointed Acquisition Committee members will serve in an advisory capacity for the period of 2023-2026.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Have sufficient stature in the visual art world or academia.
- Knowledge and skills: Minimum five years’ experience in visual arts field and some experience purchasing of visual art. Understanding of how art is valued and priced and how art appreciates in value. Some knowledge of South African art market and trends in the buying and selling of art. Outstanding knowledge of South African artists, current genres and debates artists are concerned.
- Qualification: Minimum NQF Level 7 qualification in the visual arts field.
- Representativity: Consideration of demographics including disability and provincial location.
- Have no criminal record or other disqualifications.
- Members of the Acquisition Committee must be independent and impartial. Beneficiaries from any of the ArtBankSA programmes are precluded to avoid a conflict of interest.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Consider artwork for potential acquisition by the National Museum to the ArtbankSA collection considering the purpose of the ArtbankSA.
- Recommend artwork to the National Museum for acquisition.
In implementing its scope, the Committee shall take cognisance that the ArtbankSA needs to acquire artwork for lease or future sale and apply the following considerations:
- Quality of the artwork – Assess the quality of the artwork in accordance with the criteria set out in this policy.
- Value for money – The Committee must review the pricing and ensure there is value for money. Artwork that is overpriced should not be recommended.
- Marketability – Assess the artwork to ascertain if the artwork can be successfully marketed for lease or sale by the ArtbankSA. There must be a demand for that type of artwork to avoid a situation where the artwork is collected but will never be leased.
COMPULSORY DOCUMENTS
- Completed signed application form including a brief profile/ biography.
- A CV and certified copies of Identity Document and qualifications.
- Two reference letters from art galleries/museums/institutions/curators/agents
The decision of the Council of the National Museum is final. Preference will be given to applicants who meet and exceed our requirements.
Non adherence to the above criteria will result in the application being disqualified.
