Invitation to Artists to Apply to be a Mentor

Are you an experienced visual artist? Have you been a professional artist for more than 10 years and have learnt valuable lessons that you would like an opportunity to share with the next generation of artists?

Pay it forward. Apply to be a mentor between September and December 2024.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Under this programme stream experienced visual artists will mentor entry level and emerging artists participating in the Art Creating programme helping them to improve their art making skills, gain confidence, and connections/networks. Beneficiaries will be identified through a public call. Applications will then be subjected to the pre-screening, evaluation, and adjudication process with the final approval of the beneficiaries being made by the museum.

Approved mentors will be paid in 3 tranches totaling the value of category they are approved category for.

There are two value categories for the Mentorship programme:

Category B value = R30 000 (Tranche 1 – R7 500 + Tranche 2 – R15 000 + Tranche 3 – R7 500)

Category C value = R40 000 (Tranche 1 – R10 000 + Tranche 2 – R20 000 + Tranche 3 – R10 000)                                       

MENTOR ELIGIBILITY

a.  Funding is available only to South African Citizens

b.   Artist must not already be benefiting from other the PESP

c.  Artists to participate in the programmes will be categorized into two categories

Category B

(This category will be for mid-career artists.  Depending on their experience, and skill level, artists in this category may qualify to be appointed as mentors)

Qualification guide:

– Postgraduates’ artists and/ or artists with at least 10 years’ experience as a productive studio artist can enter this category

– Artists who have had 2 or more solo exhibitions at an art gallery/ art museum involving more than 10 works

– Artists that have participated in between 10 and 20 group exhibitions at reputable galleries/institution. This includes participating as an art competition finalist

– Having received a significant national or international award will be advantageous to qualify for this category

Category C

(This category will be for established artists. Artists in this category meet the requirements to be appointed as mentors should they apply to be part of the mentorship programme)

Qualification guide:

– Postgraduate artists and/ or artists with more than 15 years’ experience as a productive studio artist can enter this category

– Artists who have had at least 5 or more solo exhibitions at an art gallery/ art museum involving more than 10 works 

– Artists that have participated in more than 20 group exhibitions, nationally and internationally. This includes participating as an art competition finalist exhibition

– Having received a significant national or international award will be advantageous to qualify for this category

d.     All applicant will be subject to a three stage evaluation process, i.e.

– Pre-screening, i.e., determination of compliance to compulsory requirements. The applications will be required to pass pre-screening to be eligible for further evaluation. 

– Evaluation, i.e., Artist’s conceptual themes, Technical accomplishment and Experience. The applicant will be required to obtain a minimum of 60 points in order to be eligible to mentor the Category A artists from the PESP5 Art Creating Programme, under the PESP5 Mentorship programme.

– Adjudication, i.e., scores from the evaluation will be adjudicated before being submitted for approval

MENTORS REPORTING AND TRANSFERS

a.    Mentors will be paid in three tranches for the duration of the contract

– Tranche 1 will be paid with the countersigned PESP5 Mentor Agreement and upon receipt of the artist’s valid invoice

– Tranche 2 will be paid with the approved second progress report, all assigned mentees have reached 75% completion of Art Creating and upon receipt of the mentor progress report and valid invoice

– Tranche 3 will be paid when mentees have completed the Art Creating artworks and approved mentor closing report and valid invoice.

b.    PESP Coordinators are to conduct monitoring and evaluation including site visits

c.    Mentors are required to create plans for the engagements with the mentees

MENTORS APPLICATIONS CRITERIA

a.    A completed application form

b.    Submit a CV (if applicable, the CV must include demonstrate years at an academic role (e.g., tertiary institution lecturer or instructor), participation in national and/or international residency, has exhibited in nationally or internationally recognized institutions and/or art fair, holds a national or international awards). Please indicate which province and district you live and work in.

c.    Must include an artist statement and brief profile/bio

d.    Certified ID copy

e.    Account details confirmed by a stamped bank letter

f.     Central Supplier Database (CSD) registration. Applicant will need to be SARS Tax compliant before appointment

g.    Be willing to enter into a written Agreement

h.    Be able to submit reports and with supporting documentation (e.g., meeting registers, mentorship plan, etc)

The decision of the National Museum is final.

Nonadherence to the above criteria will result in the application being disqualified.
